Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Advisory Committee

The mission of this Advisory Committee is to engage the fellowship widely on issues related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. We will listen, seek participation and input, and produce resources that support people of color, women, transgender people, and other historically marginalized groups. We will conduct ourselves transparently, aligned with the Traditions and Concepts of CMA.

History

At the 2019 General Services Conference, the Illinois Area asked the fellowship to host a listening session centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Differences in culture and identity were hindering Illinois’ primary purpose: to carry the message to the suffering addict.

A listening session is a 12-step service strategy where the trusted servants are asked to listen -spiritually- to the experience of the fellowship, before rushing to a solution. The session occupied a half day of the 2020 Conference.

At its annual meeting in May 2021, the Board of Trustees responded by creating a standing advisory committee centered on DEI issues. The first DEI Conference Committee was convened later that year at the General Service Conference in Dallas, TX.

In addition to the formative challenges with any new committee, we are asked to hold space for complex issues that rarely have convenient solutions. We are grateful to listen, learn, and serve the fellowship however we can.

Monthly Zoom Meeting

Anyone is welcome to join our meetings, especially if you have more curiosity than expertise around DEI issues. We meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6pm Pacific and 9pm Eastern.
